DJ Emily’s Top 10 BreakThru Radio tracks of 2006

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

So, I’ve been slacking on my site updating lately and we are a bit into 2007 but I wanted to give you some insight into music you need to be checking out!! The tracks below represent my favorite BTR tracks that were spinning in 2006. But I have no doubt that they’ll continue spinning on BTR for 2007 and probably for years to come.

10) Lonely Girl
Sophe Lux

An interesting concoction, mixing powerful lyrics, rousing instrumentals, and creating a sound all their own. Sophe Lux is a newer band to BTR but I couldn’t possibly leave them out of the countdown and I’m looking forward to hearing more from them in the future as well.

9) Neighbor Crazy
Kyle Mann Combo
The song was originally called ‘Neighbor Cathy‘ but the switch in name just made it that much more incredible.

8) Thanks For Your Time
Gotye
Every track on Gotye’s album, Like Drawing Blood, comes packed with amazing production and killer lyrics to boot. To be a standout track amongst a collection of them is a pretty insane task and this track will blow you out of the water.

7) Make Me
L.E.O.
This band which pays tribute to the 70’s icons ELO is the perfect soundtrack for anyone looking to have a good time. All of their tracks will get your head-bobbing but this one has an almost addicting appeal. If you look through my I-tunes at the tracks with the most amount of plays this one is topping the list… and that isn’t a coincidence.

6) Left Behind
Ugly Duckling

This song is great , and it’s greatness can be summed up in one lyric. “Designed like a porcupine – untouchable. I’m a four-course meal, you’re a lunchable.”
5) Lartigue
Casey Shea
This song will forever take me back to CMJ’s and my front and center seat for The Undisputed Heavyweights show. Wonderfully written and beautifully sang, Casey Shea plus this track will brighten anyone’s day.

4) Wraith Pinned To The Mist (and other games)
Of Montreal
We hear it’s likeness everyday in those Outback commercials and we still can’t get sick of it. In fact when we hear the commercial it just makes us crave the original… and a Bloomin’ Onion.
3) Stickin’ Around
The Heathens
Paying homage to my home-state of Florida this song practically brings tears to my eyes. Well, maybe not quite tears but it does muster up some intense emotions for the Sunshine State (and it’s pretty rockin’ too).

2) Feelin’ Good Feelin’ Great
E.A.R.T.H.
This song will get the party started, keep it going, and take you home. I haven’t looked back through my playlists for the year but I guarantee this track would be at the top of the list for most spins. Love this group and this song.

1) Every Time I Make A Girl Cry I Know I’ve Done My Job
Band Marino
I think the wonderfulness that is this song is summed up strictly in the title…it doesn’t get much better than that. Unless, of course, you have a fabulously talented group to back it up. Powerful vocals, fun lyrics, great instrumentals…just a catchy tune altogether.

L.E.O.

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

If you haven’t heard of the 1970’s pop group Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), please let us know and we’ll send you a mix-tape. Chances are you’d recognize at least one, if not more of the tracks we sent your way. ELO’s well mastered, mastery of the pop genre encapsulates the musical appeal of the 1970’s and the band’s uber success.

Word on the street is the success of this band is due in part to the skillful and unique production practices of one Jeff Lynne. The man has developed quite the cult following, which spawned in the 70’s and has carried on through to today. You can find many ELO tracks within the musical score for numerous hit movies (Boogie Nights, Billy Madison). Their music is also being sampled by some of today’s top selling artists (The Pussycat Dolls).

And now, lucky for us, one of Lynne’s admirers (who goes by the name of Bleu) decided to take this ELO love affair a step further by paying homage to this 70’s sensation, a labor of love he calls L.E.O. Along with an all star line-up including members of Jellyfish, Candy Butchers, Self, Chicago, the Black Crowes, and the Hanson Brothers, just to name a few, Bleu has incorporated the methods of Lynne and taken a stab at mimicking his musical stylings.

L.E.O.’s debut album, “Alpacas Orgling”, was created using Lynne’s production techniques, but with a modern twist (the tracks were sent back and forth via the internet, where whoever received them could add their own touch). The songs on the album are not covers. They are all, newly crafted tracks, but they are done so impeccably that if we threw a couple into our ELO mix-tape, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

Obviously this story sparked our interest and we had to know more. So, we sat down with William James McCauley III, aka Bleu, to find out more about L.E.O.
