DJ Emily: The Undisputed Heavyweights @ Rockwood Music Hall

I was able to take in many shows during my time in NYC for CMJ. However, the one that stands out the most is the first one I saw. We stopped by a quaint little bar called Rockwood Music Hall and the intimate setting was exactly what I was in the mood for. Being able to sit down comfortably and enjoy a glass of wine really hit the spot and set the mood for what was about to take place. One of my favorite BTR bands, The Undisputed Heavyweights took the stage and performed their asses off. Casey Shea lead the way with a split personality show, half the time he was singing sweetly to the ladies in the audience and the other half he was a gospel preacher screaming at everyone to make some noise. The entire show was spot on from beginning to end and my front and center seat made it the highlight of my trip to CMJ.

Cheap Lullaby
Our BTR Featured Label, and the artists that make them complete…
October 21, 2006

A relatively young independent label, the California-based Cheap Lullaby Records got its start a scant three years ago, when Randy Wooten (Randy and the Bloody Lovelies) Eric Holden (reknowned bassist, producer) and Joe Ross (accomplished Full Sail graduate) decided it was needed. The trio believed that artist development was the main priority in the label game, like it was in the good ol’ days, and the idea has since taken off toward a beautiful fruition.Cheap Lullaby now has international distribution, a TV and film music division, a state of the art recording studio in Venice Beach, and a roster of extremely talented artists. It’s hard to believe so much could be accomplished in just three years, but it’s obvious the three life-long friends know exactly what they are doing. It seems almost unfair that one label can boast such an impressive lineup of musicians.Cheap Lullaby has so many insanely talented artists, we couldn’t help but add them all into rotation here at BTR and we couldn’t be happier to be playing them…

BTR Artist of the Week Arrow Up!

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

BTR sat down with Arrow Up, a trio out of Orange County California, and learned that not everyone from the ‘O.C.’ is a bleached blonde bimbo. In fact, these guys are quite the opposite, and their music is pretty damn good too. Though the band Arrow Up hails from the now infamous Orange County, they are anything but what you see on TV. Not only has this band refused to conform to the stereotypical vibe of their hometown, but they haven’t given in to the typical rockstar persona either.

The trio, comprised of brothers Dylan and Colin Gilbert, along with Steve Souryal, are extremely amicable, and talented to boot. Dylan brings a strong and unique voice, desirable to any band trying to break the traditional musical mold. Dylan and Steve both share guitar and bass duties, bringing depth and diversity to each track. Colin completes the package, chipping in with steady rhythms on the drums. The trio unites as a whole to create ‘the occidental sound;’ a self diagnosed explanation of what happens when the three of them get in a room together.

BreakThru Radio recently sat down with the band to find out exactly what that sound is, discovering some other interesting tid-bits about them in the process.

BTR Artist of the Week… Band Marino.

Band Marino
It has nothing to do with Dan Marino…We think.

2006-09-11

“No.”

That was the response received after asking Orlando rockers Band Marino to divulge the story behind their name. I suppose we’ll just have to wait to find out if it has anything to do with NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino, former quarterback for the Miami Dolphins.

Unsurprisingly, the name recently caught the attention of ESPN, whose staffers chose the band to represent Florida in a one-on-one battle of the bands on September 15th. And although it’s most likely the name that initially attracted the sports giant, it’s the charismatic quality of Band Marino’s live show that must have sealed the deal.

BTR sat down with the band and got the details on the movie they scored, the upcoming ESPN gig, and their soon to be released debut album.
