The Dark Romantics LIVE at 1982
I’ve always thought of 1982 as one of Gainesville’s best live music venues, and not because I was born during that year. No, it’s because the past few shows I’ve attended there have been amazing (and the fact that they have an old-school Nintendo up in that beast only strengthens my opinion).
On this particular night, The Dark Romantics were scheduled to take the stage, and though I was completely unfamiliar with the band, I soon discovered that they hailed from Lakeland, Florida, the town I grew up in. (This connection totally added to my excitement.)
As the group stepped up, my first thought was “oh, so that’s who those girls were.” There had been two girls in the bar, prior to the set, who most of the guys in the room couldn’t take their eyes off of. While the majority of the crowd had come dressed in jeans and T-shirts, these attractive ladies looked like they had come straight out of the pages of Cosmo (but with a definite indie-rock edge). The remaining two members of the band completed the aesthetically pleasing quality of the group, with the lead singer sporting trendy glasses of the River’s Cuomo variety.
